Overview

  • Dr. Lucas earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He went on to the University of Florida (UF) for training in General Pediatrics. He served as Chief Pediatric Resident at Shands Hospital for Children and remained at UF for training in pediatric cardiology, pediatric electrophysiology and pediatric interventional catheterization.Dr. Lucas began his clinical cardiology career at the University of California, San Diego and served as the pediatric cardiology fellowship director for five years before coming to New Orleans.Dr. Lucas is the section head of pediatric cardiology for the Ochsner Hospital for Children/Ochsner Health System, which encompasses a regional network of pediatric cardiovascular services spanning Louisiana and the Gulf South.While Dr. Lucas practices general pediatric cardiology, his primary focus is on interventional catheterizations. He has special expertise and experience with advancing interventional techniques for percutaneous valve implantations, septal defect closure, PDA closure in tiny premature infants and interventions in adults with congenital heart disease. He treats patients of all sizes, from about 500gm (1 pound) to late adulthood. In a manner unique to congenital cardiology practices, he treats patients with the need for unusual or complex venous or arterial access, mechanical circulatory support, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, renal artery stenosis or aneurysms and peripheral vascular disease in a collaborative environment.Dr. Lucas is a senior editor for the two leading pediatric cardiology and interventional cardiology journals. He serves as a proctor training doctors across the U.S. for septal defect closure devices and percutaneous valves. He is a primary investigator for multiple research studies including new septal defect closure devices, pacemakers and percutaneous valve repair technologies, helping to make the newest devices and techniques available.Dr. Lucas sees patients at Ochsner's main campus on Jefferson Highway as well as in Monroe, Baptist Hospital and Covington.
