Overview

  • Dr. Christopher Bankhead is a Baton Rouge native who returned home to Louisiana and joined the Ochsner team in August 2020, after completing his fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the University of Virginia (UVA). At UVA, he served as a team physician for the James Madison University football team, the UVA men's Basketball team and the UVA men's Lacrosse team, all of which are perennial national championship contenders. He worked alongside internationally recognized thought leaders in clinical research, surgical technique, as well as sports team management. He specializes in arthroscopic and open reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee. He has a special interest in athletic injuries from adolescents through older persons who exercise for fitness but focuses on improving his patients' quality of life regardless of activity level. Dr. Bankhead completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of New Mexico before his fellowship at the University of Virginia. He has advanced experience in arthroscopic shoulder techniques including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, labral repair, shoulder stabilization including open bone transfer or grafting procedures and shoulder reconstruction. He also has extensive experience in the management of knee and hip injuries including ACL, MCL, PCL, meniscus, cartilage and patella femoral pathology as well as hip labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). I am excited about the opportunity to return home to Baton Rouge with my wife and son and join the Ochsner Sports Medicine team. Outside of work, I spend as much time as possible with my family enjoying all that Louisiana has to offer in terms of food, music and the outdoors. I try to get outside whenever I can, whether that's golf, biking, fishing or hiking.
