Overview

  • The desire to become a physician and cardiologist stems primary from his environment. Dr. Bennett grew up in a single-parent home in an impoverished inner-city housing project in Birmingham, Alabama. In this world, healthcare was viewed as an unaffordable luxury rather than a basic necessity of life. There were no annual checkups, no preventive medicine and no early diagnoses. Instead, healthcare was a community filled with fears and misconceptions about medicine— the harsh reality of poverty. As a result, cardiovascular disease went unchecked and served as a leading cause of death. All of his life, he watched the health of his community, and his family, suffer at the hands of this devastating disease. This greatly confused Dr. Bennett as a youth and still frustrates him as an adult. Just as in his community, cardiovascular disease destroys the health of many people throughout the United States. Dr. Bennett's decision to embark on a career in cardiology stems from a desire to fight this crippling disease, and make a difference in the lives of those who are affected. In terms of training, he earned an MD/Ph.D. degree from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. After residency, Dr. Bennett completed fellowships in cardiology and vascular medicine at Stanford University, followed by an advanced fellowship in interventional cardiology at Yale University consisting of coronary and peripheral vascular intervention. His clinical interests include management of patients with advanced cardiovascular disease; complex coronary and peripheral vascular interventions; critical limb ischemia; and carotid stenting in high surgical risk patients.Dr. Bennett is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Physicians. Services provided by this physician include the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular disease. He treats coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease and performs coronary and peripheral vascular interventions.
