Overview

  • Dr. Robert John Sawyer is a lifespan neuropsychologist trained to evaluate children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.Dr. Sawyer was born in Gulfport, MS and graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS. He was awarded his MS from the University of Southern Mississippi and his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Memphis. He completed his internship at the Memphis VA Medical Center. He concluded his training with a 2-year fellowship in neuropsychology at the Maryland VA Health Care System. Afterward, he remained on staff as a neuropsychologist at the Baltimore VA Medical Center where he was also the Assessment Training Co-Coordinator for the VA Maryland Health Care System and the University of Maryland Medical School Psychology Internship Program.For adults/geriatrics, Dr. Sawyer has particular interest in Alzheimer's disease (and other types of dementia or memory disorders), concussion/TBI, stroke, movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease), seizures, Multiple Sclerosis, Infectious Diseases (HIV, Hepatitis C), and psychiatric concerns. For children/adolescents/young adults, Dr. Sawyer has interest in Learning Disorders (e.g., Dyslexia), concussion/TBI, neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., Intellectual Disability, ADHD), and seizures.Outside of Dr. Sawyer's primary clinical work, he is particularly interested in brain health and ways to prevent cognitive decline (e.g., smoking cessation, exercise, nutrition, and other healthy behaviors). He provides evaluations and expertise in legal contexts. Dr. Sawyer has supervised several neuropsychology trainees and was an affiliate faculty member at Loyola University Maryland and Towson University in Maryland. He routinely conducts presentations at national and local organizations.
