Overview

  • Dr. Burnham is a board-certified, fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. He serves as the Medical Director of Sports Medicine and current Section Head of Orthopedic Surgery at Ochsner – Baton Rouge. He specializes in knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and ankle injuries, and operative and nonoperative treatment of all sports injuries. He has had experience as a team physician at the professional, collegiate and high school levels, and continues to educate and train new sports medicine residents, fellows and athletic trainers.While maintaining an active clinical practice, he also contributes to advancing the field of sports medicine through musculoskeletal research, and has published over 50 peer reviewed research publications and text book chapters on sports medicine diagnosis and treatment. In addition to his academic interests, he has served in leadership roles at the regional and national levels, and has lobbied on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. for patient rights. Dr. Burnham also serves as an orthopedic surgeon in the United States Army Reserve.Dr. Burnham is a graduate of Louisiana State University (LSU) where he earned a varsity letter in football, the Football Coach's Award and SEC Academic Honor Roll. Dr. Burnham completed his orthopedic surgery and sports medicine residency at the University of Kentucky where he trained with sports medicine knee, shoulder and cartilage experts. During residency, Dr. Burnham was awarded the Intern's Teaching Award, Best Research Presentation Awards, Outstanding Junior Resident Award and Outstanding Senior Resident Award.Dr. Burnham then completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) under the leadership of internationally-recognized sports medicine leaders such as Dr. Freddie Fu (most published ACL surgeon in the world), Dr. Volker Musahl (Chief of Sports Medicine, Pittsburgh athletics), Dr. Jim Bradley (Pittsburgh Steelers Team Doctor, past president of NFL Team Physician Society, President of AOSSM), Dr. Craig Mauro (Pittsburgh Steelers) and others. He returned to Baton Rouge to start practice with his wife Amie and their three children.
